FIBA and WABC release new grassroots coaching resource “Start Coaching”

MIES (Switzerland) – FIBA and the World Association of Basketball Coaches (WABC) have published educational resources for anyone with an interest in coaching basketball, called “Start Coaching”.

These resources are available here in English, French, Spanish and Chinese and have been developed to support National Federations to promote and grow coaches at grassroots level, including ex-players, new coaches, parents and physical education teachers.

The resources feature:

  • Coach Workbook: the “textbook” for the program
  • Activities Book: a collection of activities that coaches can use to teach
  • Practice Plans: 10 practice plans to help a coach get through their first season
  • Facilitator Handbook: the Coach Workbook including sample answers to the follow up sections

The Facilitator Handbook is to help National Federation’s facilitators conduct the Start Coaching course in their country. Facilitators shall cover all materials in the Handbook, however, can use their own activities if they wish, particularly when on court.

Patrick Hunt, President of WABC, said: “I am very proud of the work the WABC Executive Committee has undertaken to support FIBA’s National Federations in providing these Start Coaching resources and to promote coaching basketball at grassroots level. This is the key to making our sport stronger, more popular and enjoyable for all. The program is designed to give coaches starting out in coaching practical tips on how to make learning basketball fun and how to keep players active and engaged. I believe National Federations can use the resources to not only provide valuable coaching information and coaching methods but also encourage and help those interested to start coaching.”

“I wish to thank WABC for enabling us to add this valuable resource for National Federations to the existing WABC catalogue of educational resources,” said Andreas Zagklis, FIBA Secretary General. “This new resource will undoubtedly help anyone who has an interest in becoming a basketball coach gain knowledge as well as provide practical tips. FIBA will continue to collaborate with WABC and invest in its outstanding projects which continue to help grow our game and provide contemporary methods and information for coaches at all levels.”
